Book Read Event by the Women in Leadership Committee
Online | Free | Limited Registration | CEUs Available
Women in Leadership is sponsoring a book read event scheduled to begin October 2021. This event is gender identity inclusive.
Our focus is to provide a platform for open discussion on racism and how it affects our relationships, belief systems and unconscious behaviors.
The book we have chosen to begin this discussion is Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. She “examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions.” Wilkerson links the caste systems of the United States, India, and Nazi Germany.
There is no fee to register.
The book is divided in seven sections, and we will discuss each section over a seven month period. The sessions will last 1.5 hours from 7 PM to 8:30 PM EST on the 2nd Wednesday of each month beginning October 13 running through May 18, 2022 (no December session).
Registration will be limited to 20 registrants who will be able to attend all seven sessions. Ten continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded to those who complete all attendance requirements.
Registration is open to all in the community (and guests outside) as we look to explore, discuss and discover our unconscious biases as we make our way through Caste.
Chapters may want to consider this event as an opportunity for professional development.
The deadline for registration is September 15. Please sign in or create an account to register.
If we have more than 20 registrants, we will compile a waiting list and possibly reconsider the format.
Registrants are responsible for obtaining a copy of the book prior to the first meeting in October. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson is available for purchase online or at local libraries.
Preparing for the October session: Be prepared for the first session in October by reading "The Man in the Crowd" and Part One.
