    Job Summary

    The Coordinator, under the direction of the Manager, is responsible for management and coordination of this diversified program that provides a variety of pastoral and spirituality services for patients, families and staff.  Accomplishes the program objectives through a collaborative strategy that engages interdisciplinary colleagues, staff chaplains, per diem chaplains, volunteers, community resources and interested others in the work of the program.  Provides leadership for program organization, development and evaluation of services and systems.  Also provides direct services to patients, families and staff.  Other responsibilities include pastoral visitation and worship services, supervision of the chaplains, the on-call program, and coordination of parish and visiting clergy and education/training.  Participates in Hospital and Department committees, professional spiritual care organizations and community faith based groups.  Responsible to establish and oversee partnerships within the community to develop fellowships, internships and other educational opportunities, as well as to develop professional spiritual training for both clergy and seminary students. Partners with the Development Department to enhance and/ or expand program offerings.


    Complies with all department and hospital policies and procedures especially those regarding patient confidentiality and informed consent. Demonstrates and models professional behaviors in accordance with the Department of Patient and Family Services Core Values as well as the CHOP Values ICARE. Serves as a mentor/coach for staff.  Subscribes and adheres to the Chaplain Code of Ethics.

    Job Responsibilities

    1. Professional Spiritual Care: Provides spiritual care services to patients, families and staff 

    • Ensures the delivery of an effective and efficient program of Chaplaincy Services to patients, their loved ones and staff of all faith traditions
    •  Provides spiritual counseling and support to patients, families and staff throughout the hospital 
    • Initiates daily spiritual visiting 
    • Coordinates the provision of sacramental ministry for prayer, blessings, anointing and benedictions 
    • Participates in family meetings 
    • Supports families during complex medical care decision making with respect for their spiritual and cultural beliefs
    • Maintains appropriate records of spiritual care for individual patients and families 
    • Coordinates with community clergy and other spiritual advisors in the provision of care according to the preferences of the patient/family
    • Develops and maintains a strategic plan for Chaplaincy Services that is aligned with overall institutional goals and objectives


    2. Chaplaincy Leadership: Represents the hospital in matters of religion and spiritual care and provides direction for spiritual care service delivery 

    • Oversees the Schlimm Center for Prayer and Reflection and assures that the facilities are appropriately cared for and comfortable 
    • Maintains associated resources for the Spiritual Care Program 
    • Serves on Hospital Committees as assigned such as Ethics Committee 
    • Recruits, trains, supervises and schedules qualified chaplains to provide after-hours services to the Hospital.
    •  Conducts monthly peer consultation group among per diem staff 
    • Provides annual review of the performance of all program staff 
    • Develops, implements and evaluates innovative approaches to the provision of spiritual care at the Hospital. 
    • Coordinates community clergy and other spiritual advisors in a manner that permits them appropriate access to the members of their communities.
    •  Officiates at organizational events as requested

    3.Professional Education:

    Responsible for identifying the opportunities to meet the (spiritual) educational needs of families/siblings, hospital providers and other program customers.

    • Participates in the orientation and education programs of other departments.
    • Provides workshop/seminars.  Conducts periodic inter-disciplinary seminars to educate staff about the matters of spirituality for children and families as well as providers.
    • Maintains appropriate materials through a lending library that can be utilized by families or staff.
    • Provides educational programs to schools, community groups and others on chaplaincy and the services of the program.


    4.Professional Development:

    • Responsible for the development and enhancement of their professional practice and leadership skills.
    • Recognizes areas of strength and areas for development.
    • Develops plan for supervision, consultation and/or learning.
    • Utilizes team members, peers and supervisory staff in consultation for professional development.
    • Incorporates new knowledge and feedback into practice.
    • Meets annual requirements for professional continuing education.
    • Meets annual requirements for mandatory education.

    Required Education and Experience

    Required Education:

    • Must be certified as a Board Certified Chaplain by and in good standing with a national chaplaincy certifying body, such as the Spiritual Care Association, Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the National Association of Jewish Chaplains 
    • Master’s level degree in a field related to health care chaplaincy 
    • Minimum four units of Clinical Pastoral Education
    • Minimum of two years of experience in healthcare with preference for experience in palliative care and/or pediatric care 
    • Possess two to four years of progressively responsible experience as a coordinator, assistant manager or manager of chaplaincy services with a record of successful



    Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

    Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:

    • Board certification strongly preferred.

    •  Demonstrated track record of the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, staff, leaders and physicians at all levels within the Hospital and across the Care Network. 
    • Excellent organizational skills and experience in managing an institutional function requiring systems thinking in a complex, fast-paced environment. 
    • Experience working under time constraints and multiple priorities while maintaining a calm and professional approach that is compassionate and at the same time efficient. 
    • Experience managing confidential and highly sensitive information 
    • Must be willing to become competent in Outcome Oriented Chaplaincy
